Empowering Since 1963

Our Legacy

Who We Are

The Women’s Cultural and Social Society (WCSS) is a pioneering civil society organization and one of the first non-governmental organizations/civil society associations in Kuwait to receive official recognition from the Ministry of Social Affairs under Ministerial Decree No. (5), issued on February 3, 1963. Founded by a group of pioneering Kuwaiti women at a defining moment in Kuwait’s modern history, the Society became one of the country’s earliest civic institutions dedicated to social development, women’s empowerment, and community service.

Since its establishment, WCSS has played a leading role in shaping civic engagement in Kuwait through advocacy, education, and community initiatives that respond to evolving social needs. The Society launched some of Kuwait’s earliest literacy programs for women and helped create pathways for girls and women to access education, build skills, and contribute meaningfully to national life. Over time, its work has expanded to include health awareness, economic empowerment, family support, inclusive education, and initiatives that strengthen social cohesion and community well-being.

Beyond service delivery, WCSS has played an important role in advocacy, policy dialogue, and civic participation, contributing to broader conversations on women’s rights, social inclusion, and national development. Its work is strengthened through partnerships with public institutions, civil society organizations, academic bodies, and international partners, extending its reach and impact across sectors.
For more than six decades, WCSS has served generations of women and families in Kuwait, evolving alongside the country while remaining rooted in its founding mission of empowerment, service, and social progress. Today, the Society continues to advance initiatives aligned with Kuwait Vision 2035 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to national priorities in human capital development, health and well-being, social inclusion, and sustainable community development.
