The Alzheimer’s Awareness Project, established under the Women’s Cultural and Social Society (WCSS) in 2011, is one of the Society’s leading health awareness initiatives aimed at improving public understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and supporting both patients and their caregivers.
The initiative began with a public awareness campaign in September 2011, introducing the community to Alzheimer’s disease, its symptoms, early diagnosis, and appropriate ways of interacting with patients. Since then, the project has evolved into a comprehensive program combining awareness, training, community engagement, and caregiver support.
The project has been implemented through several key phases:
- Phase 1 (2011): Launch of awareness efforts through a symposium addressing early signs of Alzheimer’s and care strategies.
- Phase 2: Expansion into direct outreach to families and the organization of caregiver training sessions.
- Phase 3 (2012): Collaboration with the College of Medicine at Kuwait University to host the regional conference “Challenges and Hopes.”
- 2013–2014: Delivery of specialized training programs under the theme “Back to the Principles and Basics of Alzheimer’s Disease – The ABCs of Specific Care.”
- Ongoing: Public awareness campaigns conducted in community spaces, including malls and the Kuwait International Book Fair.
A key component of the initiative is the Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group, led by Dr. Raghad Alkordi. This initiative provides:
- Emotional and psychological support through regular group sessions
- A safe space for caregivers to share experiences and manage stress, burnout, anxiety, and depression
- Practical guidance on caregiving, including access to medical equipment resources and home care services
This support group represents one of the first dedicated platforms in Kuwait addressing the needs of Alzheimer’s caregivers, filling a critical gap in both healthcare awareness and social support systems.
